Situated south of the Sesriem gate to Sossusvlei lies the private 21 000 hectare Kulala Wilderness Reserve, the closest reserve to Sossuvlei itself. Little Kulala is in a prime location on the western side of the reserve. It offers magnificent dune scenery to the west and rugged Namib mountainous escarpment to the north and east with grassy plains and 'fairy circles' filling the spaces between.

Little Kulala has some of the design features of the established Kulala Desert Lodge, but is smaller and is situated on the dry Auab River bed. Little Kulala offers accommodation in thatched and canvas chalets or "Kulalas" (Kulala in the Namibian language "oshiwambo" means "to sleep"). Each unit is set on wooden platforms to provide maximum airflow, and has its own private en-suite bathroom and wrap-around verandah with a small plunge pool.

An internal staircase leads to the flat roof top above the bathroom which provides an ideal setting to spend the evening stargazing in your own private confines. An accommodation option for outdoor enthusiasts, we have bedrolls for the roof top to sleep under the stars from a private star gazing platform. The main area has a relaxed lounge, dining room, bar, curio shop and swimming pool all under thatch.

Little Kulala is the flagship of Namibia's extraordinary Sossusvlei area, and has for several years been attracting informed travellers, who enjoy the first-rate facilities, charming hospitality and nearby proximity to the towering sand dunes. This acclaimed Wilderness Safaris desert retreat, in the only reserve with direct access to Sossusvlei, has climate-controlled villas and an elegant entertainment area that includes al fresco fine dining as a highlight.

The 11 stylish thatched villas merge impeccably into the timeless desert landscape, with exquisite fittings and fixtures, innovative bleached decks each with a private plunge pool. The extensive use of neutral colours, gorgeous textures and natural light reproduce the soothing pastel tones of the desert. Each villa has a rooftop 'skybed' for romantic stargazing, with both indoor and outdoor showers.

Early morning guided game drives to the spectacular towering dunes are through a private gate into the reserve. Guided drives and walks are also offered on the private reserve with incredible views, desert animals and smaller desert fauna and flora. Another option, at extra cost, is a 60-minute balloon safari at first light, offering a truly unique experience to soar silently above the magnificent sand dunes and desert, ending with a champagne breakfast.

Journey through the Namib in harmony with the environment and savour the personal and sumptuous style of Little Kulala, and Wilderness Safaris' renowned hospitality Situated close by on the same property are the Kulala Wilderness Camp and Kulala Desert Lodges offering accommodation in thatched and canvas chalets.

Little Kulala Lodge Namibia

Namibia is one of those dreamlike places that make you question whether something so visually orgasmic could actually exist. Time and space are less defined here. Landscapes collide. Experiences pile up. Watch a lion stalking its prey on a never-ending plain in Etosha. Fly down a giant dune on a sandboard. Spend a night alone in the desert under a sky so thick with stars you can’t differentiate between constellations.
