Why a self-drive still needs a planner
South Africa is one of the few safari countries where a family can legally and comfortably drive themselves between cities. That does not mean the route should be a straight line on a map. The useful work is choosing which nights are self-catering, which nights are a private camp with a guide, and where an extra overnight stops a six-hour transfer from becoming the memory of the day.

Vehicles
One large automatic with unlimited kilometres and full insurance is simpler than two small cars. We often use Europcar Group E Hyundai Staria vehicles because they take a family and the luggage a two-week trip collects. Book the hours to match the flight: an afternoon collection on arrival, a 09h30 drop before a domestic departure, a 06h00 drop only when the flight actually requires it.
What to leave as own arrangements
Table Mountain tickets, most winery visits, and the domestic flights between Cape Town, KMIA or Hoedspruit, and Port Elizabeth or Victoria Falls. If a flight is implied by a car pickup and is not on the invoice, treat it as unconfirmed until you hold the e-ticket.
